"Friends are like stars, even when you cant see them you know they are there!"

On Saturday, June 5, 2004, Jolene Czeswik was killed in a car accident at the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 30, the night before her graduation from Maple Grove Senior High. Due to a power failure, the stoplight was out and it was raining. She came to a complete stop, and started to turn north onto 169, but a driver heading south hit her on the driver's side as she was turning. She died in the hospital two hours later. Her funeral was held at St. Joseph the Worker in Maple Grove on Thursday, June 10th, and she was buried in beautiful St. Patrick's Cemetary. -Tony

Crash kills teen day before graduation, by Alicia Miller

An 18-year-old Maple Grove resident died Saturday, June 5, as a result of a car crash.

Jolene Czeswik of Maple Grove was traveling eastbound on County Rd. 30 near the intersection at Hwy. 169 around 7:20 p.m. She was driving in a 1996 Eagle Talon with her cousin Kristy Williams, 25, also of Maple Grove.

The second vehicle involved in the crash, a 2002 GMC Envoy, driven by Kenneth Lebowski, 41, of Wayzata, was traveling southbound on Hwy. 169.

Czeswik was stopped at the intersection of County Rd. 30 and Hwy. 169. A State Patrol report said the stoplights were off at the intersection due to a power outage and that Czeswik looked both ways and thought all was clear and proceeded into the intersection. The two cars collided.

Czeswik was transported to North Memorial Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 9:15 p.m. Her passenger, Williams, was also transported to a hospital with a broken shoulder and concussion. The driver of the other vehicle, Lebowski, received minor injuries, but was not taken to the hospital. All three people involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.

Czeswik was supposed to have graduated the next day, Sunday, June 6, with the rest of the class of 2004 from Maple Grove High School.

Principal Conn McCartan said the school found out Sunday morning about Jolene's death. "Kids were sad about the graduation ceremony," he said.

McCartan added that the family said "Jolene was proud of this class and would have wanted people not to be bummed out and to enjoy their graduation ceremony." He told the seniors this at the graduation ceremony.

Czeswik's Foundations class bought a bouquet of flowers and set it on the chair she would have sat on at the Target Center, site of the commencement ceremony.

"The family picked up a display made for her by kids at the school Monday," McCartan said.

Some students are helping to plan music for her funeral, Thursday, June 10, 2004, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, 7180 Hemlock Lane in Maple Grove.

"She was a neat kid. A writer, in cheerleading, and wrote poetry," McCartan said.
